Returning to Wilhelmshaven, U-47 was met by Grossadmiral Raeder, who invested the entire crew with the Iron Cross, and promoted Dönitz to Rear Admiral. Hitler’s personal aircraft then flew them to Berlin, where the Führer hung the coveted Ritterkreuz (Knight’s Cross) round Prien’s neck, calling the raid ‘The proudest deed that a German U-boat could possibly carry out.’26 His sentiments were echoed by Winston Churchill, who called it ‘ … a remarkable exploit of professional skill and daring’. The loss of one antiquated battleship had not been a serious blow to the Royal Navy’s combat capability, but the damage to its prestige was immense.27
